The Lhomon Society (Samdrupjongkhar Initiatives- SJI) through their project is targeting to empower women and youth in the villages of Menchari and PhajoGoenpa in the far southeast rural Dzongkhag of Samdrupjongkhar.

  • The emphasis on creating in-village employment opportunities for the youth are being targeted by providing hands-on skill development training. 10 youngsters from the village have been trained in bamboo craft making and marketing.
  • The women’s pottery group has been formed (2 M, 8F) and have been trained in traditional pottery making and marketing.
  • The products have been tested for the local market and are being sold through the outlets.
  • Farmers in the villages are testing the SRI (System of Rice Intensification) method of rice production, in order to improve their local food self-sufficiency. 11 farmers (3M, 7F) have been trained.

The major challenges faced by the communities were the time-consuming process for land lease in the village for construction of a studio. The members resorted to procurement of land, through their own contribution. Sourcing of machinery and equipment was delayed.
